The post man, Anton Chekhov

Another story in which nothing happens.  A student hitches a ride with a postman on his wagon.  One gets the expectation that something will happen, a conversation will be struck, there will be stories on the road, a good road trip but nope.  The student tries to get the post man to talk and the post man remains aloof.  Even when there is a near accident because of stubborn horses, the postman doesn’t warm to him.  Gradually the malaise of the postman infects the student and the journey ends uneventfully.  Student gets to his destination. The postman keeps his angry, unfriendly expression. No change.

The closing ends with a rhetorical question, With whom was he angry? Was it with people, with poverty, with the autumn night?
